++ Haldir: Haldir's Name
Haldir's name is Sindarin, and it means "hidden one" in the Common Tongue, though many people argue that it means "tall one". ("hall"=hidden; "dir"=one). "Dir" is a masculine word for "one". Thus, "hidden male", if you want to be completely precise. (I am, however, not a male :-P). It is possible that he was named after the earlier Haldir of Nargothrond, even though he is a little-known Elf. Less-known among us than Haldir of Lórien, but perhaps more well-known among the Elves.

Pronunciation: HAL-deer

In Tolkien's earlier version of The Lord of the Rings - The Treason of Isengard - Haldir was originally named 'Haldir', then Tolkien revised and re-named many characters, and 'Haldir' turned into 'Hathaldir'. After more revisions and alterations, the characters' names were final and Tolkien had changed the Elf's name to 'Haldir' once again.
